How to Prepare for a School Music Audition: A Guide for Students and Parents
Updated: Sep 30
School auditions can feel high stakes, whether your child is trying out for honors band, orchestra seating, chorus placement, or the school musical. The good news is that preparation makes a big difference. A clear plan turns a nervous few minutes into a chance to show real progress. Here is how families can prepare step by step.
Start early and read the requirements
Most auditions list requirements well in advance. Read them carefully with your child and share them with their private teacher. Common requirements include:
A prepared solo or excerpt, sometimes chosen from a set list
Scales, often in specific keys and at a set tempo
Sight-reading, which means playing or singing music seen for the first time
For singers, a short song and sometimes a vocal range check
For musicals, a short monologue or dance call in addition to singing
Starting six to eight weeks ahead gives time to learn material well instead of cramming it in the final days.
Build a practice plan
Break preparation into small daily goals, such as one scale and one section of the solo. Practice slowly at first, then build speed once notes and rhythms are secure. Record practice sessions on a phone and listen back together, because students often hear things they miss while playing. Sight-reading improves with a few minutes of new music every day. Practice the audition itself
Hold a few mock auditions at home in the final weeks. Have your child walk in, introduce themselves, and perform everything in order, just like the real day. Invite a grandparent or neighbor to listen, since a small audience helps build comfort with nerves. On audition day, plan a light meal, a short warm-up, and plenty of time to arrive calmly.
How a private teacher helps
A private teacher can choose music that shows your child's strengths and polish details a group class cannot cover. Every Evergreen Studios teacher is EvergreenCertified, meaning background-checked, abuse-prevention trained, and personally vetted. Lessons happen in your home, on the instrument your child will prepare with. Learn more about in-home music lessons in Wilmington.
After the audition, talk with your child about what went well and what they learned from the experience. Whatever the result, the preparation itself builds skills that carry into the next season. Students who audition regularly often find that nerves get easier to manage each time they perform.
How to get started
Private music lessons are $320 for one month. That covers four 45-minute lessons with the same teacher in your home.
