Do I Need a Piano at Home to Take Piano Lessons?

Many families hesitate to start piano lessons because they do not own a piano. The good news is that you do not need an acoustic piano to begin. You do need some kind of instrument at home, because progress depends on practice between lessons. Here is what really matters for a beginner.

Yes, you need an instrument at home

Lessons happen once a week, but learning happens in the days between. A student without an instrument at home cannot build the habits and finger strength that lessons introduce. For in-home lessons, the teacher also uses your instrument during the lesson. That means having a keyboard or piano ready before the first lesson is important.

What a good beginner keyboard needs

A digital keyboard can work very well for the first years of lessons, as long as it has the right features. Look for these when shopping:

  • 88 keys, or at least 61 for very young beginners at the start

  • Full-size keys, so hand position matches a real piano

  • Weighted or touch-sensitive keys, so pressing harder plays louder

  • A sustain pedal that plugs into the keyboard

  • A sturdy stand and an adjustable bench or chair

A headphone jack is a nice bonus, since it allows quiet practice early in the morning or late at night.

Acoustic piano or digital piano

Acoustic pianos offer rich tone and a natural touch, but they need tuning and take up more space. Digital pianos stay in tune, fit smaller rooms, and cost less to maintain. Many students practice on a digital piano for years with excellent results. Our full comparison of keyboard versus piano for beginners explains the tradeoffs in detail.

When to consider an upgrade

As students advance, they may need more expressive control than a basic keyboard offers. Your teacher can tell you when an upgrade would truly help. Because our teachers come to your home, they play on your instrument every week and can give specific advice. Every Evergreen Studios teacher is EvergreenCertified, meaning background-checked, abuse-prevention trained, and personally vetted. Families preparing to begin can read what to expect at your first piano lesson and our in-home piano lessons guide.

Where you place the instrument matters as much as which one you buy. Set the keyboard or piano in a bright spot the family passes often, away from the television. An adjustable bench helps children sit with forearms level with the keys. Our guide on how to set up a practice space at home has more ideas for creating a spot your child will actually use.

How to get started

Private piano lessons are $320 for one month. That covers four 45-minute lessons with the same teacher in your home.
