Start Music Lessons in the New Year: A January Guide for Wilmington Families
Updated: Sep 30
January is the most popular month to start music lessons, and for good reason. The holidays are over, school routines are back, and many homes have a new instrument that arrived in December. Evergreen Studios brings a private teacher to your home in the Wilmington area. A New Year's resolution turns into a weekly habit rather than a good intention.
Why January works
The spring semester is long and steady, with fewer interruptions than the fall. A student who starts in January has four or five months of lessons before summer. That is enough time to learn to read music, play several pieces, and build a practice routine. Adults find that January goals stick better when a teacher shows up at the door every week.
Turn a resolution into a routine
Pick a lesson time that will not move, such as right after school or early Saturday morning
Set up the instrument in a room where it stays out and ready
Agree on a short daily practice window, five to fifteen minutes to start
Put a practice chart on the fridge so progress is visible
Plan a small goal for spring, like playing a song for grandparents
Our guide on how to help your child practice has more on building the habit.
New instrument under the tree
If a keyboard, guitar, or violin arrived over the holidays, January is the time to put it to work before the excitement fades. A teacher can check that the instrument is set up correctly. They can confirm a violin is the right size and a keyboard has weighted keys. If the instrument is not a good fit, the teacher can suggest a better option. See our guides on keyboards versus pianos and violin sizing.
For adults starting fresh
Many adults in Wilmington, Leland, and the beach communities pick January to finally learn piano or guitar. Adult lessons are built around your goals and your schedule, with no pressure to perform. Read about adult beginner piano lessons and adult beginner guitar lessons.
Teachers you can trust
Every Evergreen Studios teacher completes the EvergreenCertified process. That includes a background check, abuse-prevention training, and personal vetting by our team. Your child works with the same teacher every week, starting in January and continuing as long as you like.
