What to Expect at Your First Piano Lesson at Home
Updated: Sep 30
The first piano lesson can feel like a big moment for a child and a parent. Knowing what will happen makes it easier for everyone to relax and enjoy it. Here is what a typical first in-home lesson looks like with Evergreen Studios, and how to get ready.
Before the teacher arrives
A little preparation helps the first lesson start smoothly. You do not need anything fancy. These simple steps are enough:
Clear the area around the piano or keyboard and make sure there is good light
Set up a bench or chair so your child's forearms are about level with the keys
Have a pencil and a folder or notebook ready for lesson notes
Keep pets and siblings busy nearby so the first minutes stay calm
Make sure the keyboard is plugged in and the sustain pedal is connected
If you are still choosing an instrument, read our guide on keyboard versus piano for beginners before the first lesson.
What happens during the lesson
The teacher usually begins by getting to know your child and asking what music they enjoy. Next comes posture and hand shape, including how to sit and where to place the fingers. Most first lessons include a short piece or pattern the student can play by the end. Teachers also check what your child already knows, so the plan starts at the right level. The pace stays friendly, and the goal is for your child to leave excited to come back.
What your child takes away
By the end of the first lesson, most students have a clear practice goal for the week. It might be a short piece, a finger exercise, or a pattern of keys to find. The teacher will explain how long to practice and what good practice looks like. Parents can listen to the last few minutes and ask questions. Our guide on how to help your child practice covers the first weeks in more detail.
Who will be teaching in your home
It is natural to want to know who is coming into your home. Every Evergreen Studios teacher is EvergreenCertified, which means background-checked, abuse-prevention trained, and personally vetted. Your child will work with the same teacher every week. If you are still comparing options, our guide on how to choose a piano teacher in Wilmington lists good questions to ask. After the first few months, parents often ask about next steps. Read first songs to learn on piano and our guide on when to switch music teachers.
How to get started
Private piano lessons are $320 for one month. That covers four 45-minute lessons with the same teacher in your home.
