How to Tune a Guitar for Beginners: A Simple Step-by-Step Guide
Updated: Sep 30
A guitar that is out of tune makes even correct chords sound wrong. Beginners often think they are playing badly when the real problem is tuning. Learning to tune takes only a few minutes to understand. After a few weeks, most students can tune their guitar in under a minute.
Standard tuning, string by string
Most guitar music uses standard tuning. From the thickest string to the thinnest string, the notes are:
Sixth string, the thickest: low E
Fifth string: A
Fourth string: D
Third string: G
Second string: B
First string, the thinnest: high E
Many students remember the order with a short phrase, such as Eddie Ate Dynamite, Good Bye Eddie.
Using a clip-on tuner or app
A clip-on tuner attaches to the headstock and reads the vibration of each string. Tuner apps on a phone use the microphone and work well in a quiet room. Pluck one string at a time and watch the display. If the note reads flat, slowly tighten the tuning peg to raise the pitch. If it reads sharp, loosen the peg slightly, then tune back up to the note. Tuning up to a note, rather than down, helps the string hold its pitch.
Tips for keeping a guitar in tune
New strings stretch for the first few days, so they drift out of tune often at first. Temperature and humidity changes also affect tuning, which is common in the Wilmington area. Keep the guitar away from hot cars, air vents, and outside doors. Check the tuning at the start of every practice session, even if it sounded fine yesterday. If a guitar never seems to stay in tune, a music shop can check the tuning pegs and setup.
Tuning by ear is a great skill to build later. Once students are comfortable with a tuner, teachers often introduce simple ear-tuning methods that train listening.
Learning with a teacher at home
In-home lessons mean the teacher can check and tune your guitar at every visit. They also teach students to do it themselves until it becomes second nature. Every Evergreen Studios teacher is EvergreenCertified, meaning background-checked, abuse-prevention trained, and personally vetted. Parents can help young children by checking the tuner together at the start of practice. After a few weeks, most children can do it on their own, which builds independence and a sharper ear for pitch.
How to get started
Private guitar lessons are $320 for one month. That covers four 45-minute lessons with the same teacher in your home.
