Drums are the one instrument that never travels well, which makes in-home lessons a natural fit. Evergreen Studios sends an EvergreenCertified drum teacher to homes in Porters Neck and Ogden each week. Your student learns on the same kit they practice on, with no drive down Market Street to a studio.

Learning on your own drum kit

Most studio students take lessons on a kit that is set up differently from the one at home. When the teacher comes to you, they can adjust the throne height, pedal position, and cymbal angles for good posture. They can also help tune the drums so they sound their best. Everything learned in the lesson carries straight into the next practice session.

How to start without a full kit

You do not need a full drum set before the first lesson. Many beginners start with a practice pad, sticks, and a metronome app. Once the basics are steady, families often add an electronic kit with headphones or a small acoustic kit. Your teacher will tell you when your student is ready and what features matter for a beginner.

Noise is the most common worry parents mention about drums. Mesh heads, low-volume cymbals, and headphones on an electronic kit keep practice friendly for siblings and neighbors. A rug under the kit also helps reduce sound that travels through the floor.

What drum students learn in the first year

Many children are ready for drums once they can follow a steady beat and focus for a full lesson. Teens often move quickly, and adults are welcome at any stage. Most first-year students work on these skills:

  • A relaxed grip and stroke that gives control without tension

  • Counting out loud and reading basic rhythm notation

  • Rudiments such as single strokes, double strokes, and paradiddles

  • Rock, pop, and worship grooves played along with real songs

  • Keeping steady time with a metronome

Porters Neck and Ogden students attend New Hanover County schools, where band programs give percussionists a place to play with others. A private teacher adds the one-on-one technique work that a full band class does not have time to cover.

Every Evergreen Studios teacher completes the EvergreenCertified process before teaching in any Porters Neck or Ogden home. That includes a background check, abuse-prevention training, and personal vetting by our team. Your student keeps the same teacher every week, which builds trust and steady progress.

How to get started

Private drum lessons are $320 for one month. That covers four 45-minute lessons with the same teacher in your home.
