First Songs to Learn on Guitar: Easy Songs for Beginners

Most people pick up a guitar because they want to play songs, not exercises. The best beginner teachers use that motivation from the very first lesson. With just a few chords, a new guitarist can play real music surprisingly quickly. This guide covers the chords and songs that usually come first.

The chords that unlock hundreds of songs

A handful of open chords appear in a huge number of popular, folk, country, and worship songs. Most beginners learn these first:

  • E minor and A minor, which use only two or three fingers

  • G major and C major, two of the most common chords in popular music

  • D major, which appears in countless folk and worship songs

  • E major and A major, which open the door to blues and rock

Once a student can switch smoothly between three or four of these chords, whole songs become possible.

Easy first songs to try

Traditional and folk songs are great starting points because they are simple and familiar. Many teachers start with tunes like Happy Birthday, This Land Is Your Land, Amazing Grace, and Down in the Valley. Single-note melodies such as Ode to Joy and Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star teach reading tablature and finding notes on the fretboard. Your teacher will also look for popular songs your student loves that use beginner chords. Playing a favorite song, even in a simplified version, keeps practice exciting.

Why steady rhythm matters more than speed

Beginners often rush chord changes and stop the strum to find the next shape. A good teacher slows songs down and uses simple strumming patterns so the rhythm never stops. Practicing chord changes on their own, one pair at a time, builds smooth transitions. A metronome app helps students keep an even beat. Soon, songs start to sound like music instead of a string of separate chords.

Sore fingertips are normal in the first few weeks. Short daily practice sessions build calluses gradually, and the discomfort fades as fingers adjust.
